A breif article describing the requirement for small businesses to do SEO.
As a small business owner your web site is one of the most important marketing tools available to you. If your web site isn’t working as well as you had hoped there may be several reasons for this. One of which is likely to be inadequate search engine optimisation (SEO).
In the world encompassing the Internet it can be quite daunting and difficult to choose a company to help promote your small business to a global audience. The potential is immense and the wealth of techniques used is quite diverse and can be complicated. If you are a small business owner you may not have expert staff to call on to help you promote your small business, you may also find it a struggle to carry out all of the essential tasks required to optimise your web site. You may not have realised it yet but this is one of the main reasons that companies specialise in web site promotion and search engine optimisation (SEO).
SEO is not the be all and end all but small business web site owners should remember that it is important to at least perform some basic SEO and, if possible tackle some more advanced SEO .
Let’s consider your web site, what is its purpose?
Without a doubt you will answer something like… to get more trade, to get more sales, to get more customers or get more publicity thus promoting your business. Well there we have it, we know what we want but how do we make our small business web site work?
The answer is with good customer friendly design and SEO. Why SEO? If you were to place an advert in a newspaper or magazine you can be sure that it will be seen by a good amount of the papers circulation. On the Internet it’s not that simple! Yes you do have 365 days of 24/7 advertising per year so that is fantastic isn’t it? It’s a shame, but some small businesses find out the hard way that it isn’t so fantastic. On the Internet everything currently is driven by search of some sort, I guess you could call this “focused” or “targeted” as the Internet user (potential customer) normally knows what they are searching for. If you know your customers and your market then SEO can help you promote your small business web site sometimes promoting you so well you can get listed on the first page of results returned by the search engine ahead of major corporate organisations. So it is definitely worth considering spending some time, effort and a wee bit of money on some focused or targeted SEO.
Ok so I'm convinced, I want implement SEO how do I do it and how can I promote my web site cheaply?
Difficult one to answer but finding someone who will do it within your budget is a good place to start. Be sensible, no one will do it for nothing and be careful. In other avenues you get what you pay for most of the time, if you don’t you take the product back and get your money back. This is not so easy to do with a service, you also have to bear in mind that you are paying for a service that can take a little time to become effective.
1. My number one tip is to make sure you sign up for and implement some kind of web site analytics before you purchase any SEO services, this will help you to see the difference the SEO service is making to your site. If you are unsure how to do this any oblidging SEO company will be happy to help you, don't be in a hurry, leave the analytics running for a couple of months then implement your SEO, this way you will see the difference the SEO is making.
2. My number two tip is to use site like Which Web Design Company to choose a suitable company to help you. Make sure you read the reviews posted by the companies customers and don't be afraid to ask questions.
3. My number three tip is to review your SEO strategy regularly, the internet is constantly evolving and your position can change on a daily basis.
More advanced SEO can be undertaken further down the line as the customers budget allows. Most web site owners find that some basic SEO is enough to get their web site working.
Basic SEO - title, description and keyword analysis and search engine submission, link building.
Advanced SEO – includes basic SEO plus more link building, re-writing parts of your web site, preparation of specialised landing pages, adding new targeted and optimised pages, internal links to your own content, translation into other languages.
